Finite Element Thermomechanical Analysis of an Exhaust Manifold System of a Diesel Engine for Automotive Applications
In this paper a numerical methodology is presented for the fatigue life assessment of engine components subjected to thermomechanical loadings. In particular, the proposed computational approach consists of different subsequent steps of calculation including thermal and a mechanical Finite Element computations and a final fatigue analysis. Both a non-linear mechanical constitutive law of the material and a proper thermal low-cycle fatigue criterion are employed in the analyses. The efficiency of the methodology is proved by a comparison between experimental and numerical results obtained during the design process of a prototype exhaust manifold system of a diesel engine for automotive applications.
